As 2010 approaches, the top real estate New Year’s resolution for Americans will be buying a new home during the coming year. One in six (15.4 percent) home buyers are considering saving up, according to a national survey commissioned by Move.com.

Especially with the recent extension and expansion of the home buyer’s tax credit, people are looking to take advantage of affordable housing prices. Move.com found that 17.7 percent of Americans want to take the plunge and finally become first-time home buyers. To help their search, they can refer to the weekly list of the Top 10 Most Searched Homes in the United States.

A total of 15. 7 percent of home buyers consider purchasing an investment property their top resolution, with men (18.9 percent) significantly more likely than women (12.6 percent) to say that they will be searching for an investment property. The survey revealed another discrepancy between men and women when it came to whether they are planning to save money for a new home in 2010: 37 percent of men said it will be a top priority while only 27.9 percent of women agreed.

The survey also unveiled that home improvement is a number one New Year’s resolution for 37.7 percent of Americans, while 9.1 percent say that their major goal for the New Year is to fix their credit so that they can buy a home.
